Profile:
Doncaster-born Steve Beaglehole's playing career started with great promise as he represented England at Under-Eighteen and Under-Nineteen levels but his professional career did not take off and games at Reserve level with Barnsley and Sheffield United were the highest he achieved. When he failed to make the grade as a player he turned his attention to coaching and He obtained a degree in Sports Science, qualified as a Physical Education teacher and became the youngest-ever to obtain an "A" licence in Football coaching at the age of twenty-three. After holding Youth team coaching positions with Doncaster Rovers and Middlesbrough, he became Reserve team coach at Nottingham Forest and then Leeds United. He became Doncaster's Manager at the age of twenty-nine, after Billy Bremnner had left in November 1991 and was younger than most of the players. He was Manager until July 1993 but as the club fell on hard financial times he became the Under-Twenty-One's coach at Nottingham Forest, where he stayed for two and a half years before becoming Reserve and Youth coach at Elland Road, where he stayed for eighteen months. He then coached part-time at Ipswich Town before linking up with Alan Hill once more at Leicester City's Academy in October 2000. He was also the Manager of the Northern Ireland Under-Nineteen and Under-Twenty-One teams from June 2008 to November 2011. He remains the Academy Coach at Leicester City.
The game was watched by a crowd of 4,360 and the proceeds were split between the Leeds Reserve Coach, Steve Beaglehole and the Doncaster Rovers youth set-up in equal shares. There was a strong Leeds connection to the Doncaster team, with former Juniors Dean Walling, Lee Warren and Martin Foster playing and Ian and Glynn Snodin as Manager and Assistant Manager respectively. Bruno Ribeiro gave Leeds a second minute lead when he shot home from the edge of the penalty area slightly to the left of the goal. A few moments later he looked to have got a second but the home keeper, Andrew Warrington, got down well to smother. Alf-Inge Haaland and Matthew Jones both went close to increasing United's lead before Michael Bridges latched on to a through ball from Gary Kelly and held off a challenge from Dean Walling to score United's second just after the half-hour mark. The strike came at a good point as the home side had been pressing and Paul Robinson had made a fine save from David Penney and then rose to keep out a rising shot from Ian Duerden. Paul Shepherd replaced Stephen McPhail at half-time and from the sixty-fourth minute, when David Robertson replaced Gareth Evans at Left Back, there was a succession of substitutions as Warren Feeney came on for Derek Lilley at Centre Forward three minutes later, Alan Maybury replaced Matthew Jones seven minutes after that and Damian Lynch came on for Alf-Inge Haaland six minutes after that. Naisbett remained unused on the bench.
